Energy systems modelling and integrated assessment to understand climate mitigation pathways
Quantitative, model-based scenarios are an important tool to investigate and compare different options to mitigate anthropogenic climate change. These pathways played an important part in the assessment for the IPCC’s "Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C“ (SR15) published two years ago. In this workshop, we will discuss the underlying principles of the integrated-assessment models used to compute these pathways, and how they informed well-publicized headline statements of the SR15 like „reducing emissions by half until 2030“. We will also analyze the options to mitigate climate change in the larger context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to understand synergies and trade-offs between competing societal priorities and objectives.
We will also discuss the challenge of how to communicate key findings from scientific literature to a wider (non-expert) audience and how to make accessible the quantitative results and many implicit assumptions „baked into" the models.
The discussion in the workshop will be in German and/or English depending on the preference of the participants, but all workshop material (powerpoint slides, handouts) will be in English.
